Hi Parents,
We had a great first week back at school. January’s themes are some of my favorite! We started off learning about the letter Ww. Here is a snap shot…
On Tuesday our theme was, ‘Welcome Back.’ In morning centers the kids completed a color by number, they cut and glued their W page, they made the letter W by doing a number dot to dot, and they used pompoms to make winter pictures. In afternoon centers, the kids drew a picture of something they did over winter break on a mitten, colored it, and then cut it out. These are hanging in our classroom and look great! They also finished their color by number from the morning, worked on puzzles, and found little pictures in rice bins and clipped them on clips. We ended the day with a write the room. The class looked for different gingerbread faces and wrote the word for the expression the gingerbread was making i.e., happy, sad, etc. It’s always a challenge for them the form letters on their own!
On Wednesday our them was, ‘Watermelons.’ In morning centers they rolled a die and counted ‘seeds’ (beads) on to a watermelon, they cut and glued the letter W on to a watermelon, they traced watermelon shapes, and they made patterns with pattern cards. In the afternoon we had art. The kids painted ‘snow’ on to a winter tree with their fingers using white paint. We ended the day by doing a ‘hey riddle riddle’ with the letter W. Different W words hang on the wall and the kids have to answer the riddle to figure out which picture the riddle is talking about. This activity is great for beginning sound recognition and rhyming!
On Thursday our theme was, ‘Winter Wonderland.’ In morning centers the kids rolled dice and covered up numbers in a snow globe, they cut and glued a polar bear, they matched shapes to make a snowman, and they made snowflakes with erasers and gems. In afternoon centers the kids played with LEGO’s and magna tyles. They also finished their polar bear and used dot markers to paint a snowflake. We ended the day with an arctic animal I spy. The kids had to go around the room and find each animal on their sheet and color it nicely and inside the lines.
As we get ready for conferences, I’m starting to evaluate the kids asking about letters, numbers, sounds, etc. So many of them have learned so much already! I’ll be letting you know where they are and areas to work on the 2nd half of the year.
Next week we talk about the letter I. Don’t forget we will be eating ice cream on Thursday!
Take Care,
Missy
