We learned about the Marvelous letter Mm this week !
On Monday we started out with Magnet Day. We used magnets to work our fine motor muscles by taking a cookie sheet with lines on it, and a magnet ball on top of the cookie sheet and magnet wand under it. The kids had to use the want to trace their lines with the magnet ball and the magnet wander under the sheet to guide the ball in the same pattern as our lines. I have to say they did this even better than I could when I demonstrated it for them! I was so impressed. We had some upper and lowercase M’s cut out and as they picked a paper, they had to find which upper or lowercase letter it matched and glue it on. These got sent home in their folders so you could see their hard work. To really drive home our magnet theme and letter recognition we also used magnet letters on cookie sheets to match all of our uppercase letters.
Tuesday was one for the books. Our letter Mm theme was MUSTACHE! We really had a good time with this one. One of my favorite things to do with my classes is play pin the mustache on the teacher. I posted some photos in GroupMe so if you haven’t seen them yet, head over there. I spun each kid around 3 times and set them loose with eyes closed to see who could pin their mustache closest to my nose on a photo of me. There were lots of giggles during this game. During centers on Tuesday, we had many a mustache of various sizes they measured using Unifix cubes. Once they figured out how long their mustaches were, they counted their blocks and wrote that number down on their quick kits (that’s what we call them at ABC, but a quick kit is just an erasable pouch to hold paper). We are also still working on writing our names with one capital at the beginning and the rest lowercase, so we practiced name writing as well. The class also got to hear me read a book called Moosestache. It’s a really funny book where a moose has a mustache that is sooooooo long, he can’t do anything without it getting in the way. I think they enjoyed it!
Wednesday was another big hit with Muffin Day. Our entire class got to have a special treat before lunch. We had birthday cake muffins!! I know the bags are tiny, but they had those muffins gone in no time. We used our quick kits Wednesday to practice the Letter Mm formation. We worked on not just writing the letter but making sure the letters are the appropriate size. They practiced both upper and lowercase writing. The class was also introduced to our letter cut and paste paper. We will do this page for every letter we learn. We go over how to write the letter, what sound that letter makes, and then glue on the 3 pictures that start with that letter. At the end of the year, I turn these into a little booklet for you to see what amazing progress they make.
Thursday, I got to see some of you at the apple orchard! I’m sorry I didn’t get a chance to see each one of the kids, but I hope you all enjoyed the day.
Have a wonderful weekend and we will see you on Monday!!
