Week one! This week is always a bit of a learning curve. There are so many new things and people so we spend a lot of time learning how our days will run and adjusting to each other. So far, it seems that the kids are getting along well and I’m already seeing friendships blossom.

On Tuesday, we went over our classroom expectations. My one big rule is that we don’t hurt anyone on the outside or the inside. I used a few examples to help them understand what that means. We also did a run through of our circle time routine. For centers on Tuesday, I kept it pretty easy peasy. Some fine motor work, with ripping up construction paper to decorate our glue bottle picture, we practiced name writing using our erasable quick kits and also used tangrams and pictures to learn some visual discrimination. Our book today was Pete the Cat rocking in my school shoes.

Wednesday, we continued with our welcome week with shape sorting, a little more name writing, and a poke a hole picture. Shape sorting was used to see the difference between ovals and circles. This activity also showed me some of their cutting skills. You will notice during the school year we will do a few poke a hole activities.  Really working on those hand muscles, we used golf tees and push pins. I show them how cool it is when they poke a hole the picture magically shows up on the other side! This was a larger picture, so we continued this into Thursday.

Centers on Thursday were a bit more structured and helped with learning to follow directions. They needed to write their names and draw a picture of themselves at school. Today we did some uppercase letter matching as well. They took turns picking letters out of jar and had to find its match on the paper.  To wrap our day we did some bear balancing! I put some chairs out and put tape in between them to make a “bridge”. They had to go slow and see how many bears they could balance. This was also one of the first activities they have done as a group and they worked so well together.

I am so thankful for each and every one of the kiddos and this year is going to be great!!!

Next week, we start All About Me week.
