M is for Mustache

Monday was all about Monsters (all pretend of course) 🙂 Practicing some cutting skills with cutting out all the pieces to their monster man. Then they got to choose where and how they wanted those pieces to look. They rolled some dice to see how many monster eyes they needed to add to their monster faces and then added them. This is a really fun way to practice one to one counting and number sense.

Magnet Tuesday was also a big hit. The class got to match magnet letters to their quick kits to improve letter recognition, Letter Mm writing, and our math center was number tower building. Each kid picked a card that had number sense numbers from 1-5 on it. They had to find the coordinating numbers on cups to build their tower. (See photos on GroupMe) At the end of the day we played with every magnet I have! I brought in a large magnetic white board, gave them magnet blocks, magnet tiles, magnet letters, and magnet people and let them and their imagination run loose!

If you Give a Moose a Muffin…  not only did we read the book, but we also got to do a muffin tasting! I think this if the first year everyone ate and enjoyed the muffins. Our math center was putting “blueberries” onto muffins and then counting how many they had after. Writing was our letter Mm cut and paste page. The kids had to trace M’s, write M’s and then cut out and glue the pictures that started with the letter Mm.  Letter recognition for today was muffins with each letter of the alphabet on them. I had them laid out on the table and asked to kids to find each letter. Whoever found the letter first, fed it to the moose.

Finally for letter Mm on Thursday, we had mustache day! We used unfix cubes to measure different size mustaches, sorted upper- and lower-case M’s, and made letters on our rubber band peg boards. At the end of the day, we played pin the mustache on the teacher! Each kiddo took a turn trying to tape a mustache on a picture of me. I spun them around 3 times and then had them close their eyes and get as close as they could.

Next week we start our October letters. F, O, P, and R. We also will have our first week of specials. On Wednesday, all 5 of the All-Day classes rotate for 15 minutes learning special subjects. They will learn, Spanish, Sign Language, Phonics, and Science.
